It's the middle of the Great Depression, and ten year old orphan Bud Caldwell finds himself "on the lam" after escaping from his latest abusive foster home. All of Bud's possessions fit into one beat up old suitcase that he guards with his life. In that suitcase are the only things he has to remember his mother by--a photo, some flyers advertizing a jazz band, and a few rocks with numbers scribbled on them. Before his mother's death four years earlier, she had treated these things like they were valuable treasures, and Bud is certain that the man from the jazz band on the flyers is his father. After escaping the foster home, he decides to go in search of the man he thinks is his dad. To find out what happens, you'll have to read the book!
Teachers: There's a great author's note at the end, where the author talks about the real people in his life that the characters are based on.
