This is the story of Despereaux, a frail, unfortunate mouse who is labeled inferior from the moment of his birth. No one expects him to amount to much of anything, especially since he's born with his eyes wide open--a true sign that he's been born to fail. His body is small and his ears are enormous and he is nothing but a disappointment to all who know him. While the characters in this book have no faith in him, THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX made me want to champion this little mouse--especially as he tenaciously beat the odds and lived--and not only lived, but went on to become a genunine hero--much more than "just a disappointment." My favorite thing about Despereaux is that he never loses hope. No matter what dangers he faces, from the rats in the dungeon to the wiles of Roscuro and Miggery Sow, this mouse never loses hope.
